To Be a Champion

olympic-ringsAt the end of this year’s Olympic games, I want to share a few quotes from some of the contenders of the past and present that have inspired me to keep pushing myself toward excellence in my own life:

Mary Lou Retton:  “Each of us has a fire in our hearts for something.  It’s our goal in life to find it and keep it lit”

Gabby Douglas:  “The hard days are the best because that’s where champions are made”

Mia Hamm:  “I am building a fire.  And every day that I train I add more fuel.  At just the right moment, I light the match”

Michael Phelps:  “If you want to be the best, you have to do things that other people aren’t willing to do”

Nadia Comaneci:  “I don’t run away from a challenge because I am afraid.  Instead I run toward it because the only way to escape fear is to trample it beneath your feet”

Hope Solo:  “True heroes are made of hard work and integrity”

The Apostle Paul:  1.  “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace”.  2. “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.  Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”  3.  “Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.”

  1.  Acts 20:24
  2. 1 Corinthians 9:24-25
  3.  Romans 15:4

I’d love to hear some of your favorite quotes – please leave a comment to encourage the rest of us…
